NUS supports Cairns couple and the decriminalisation of abortion in QLD

Print PDF
Following the announcement that the Cairns couple will go to trial over abortion charges on 12 October 2010, NUS Women's Department has endorsed the 9 October 2010 National Day of Action. Organised by the Women's Abortion Action Campaign (WAAC) in Sydney, Pro-Choice Action Collective in Brisbane and Radical Women in Melbourne, the groups will be organising rallies on the Saturday before the trial. Supporters will remember that a young couple in Cairns have been charged under Qld Criminal Code provisions which relate to abortion. If convicted, the young woman will face a maximum sentence of 7 years and the young man will face a maximum sentence of 3 years. The laws under which they have been charged date from 1899, are archaic and out of touch with Australian community opinion on the issue of abortion.

Abbott's Heaven, Your Hell

Abbott's Heaven, Your Hell is an initiative of the National Union of Students Women's Department.

The impetus for this campaign is hopefully obvious: Tony Abbott is a politician who is unable to separate his religious, traditionalist convictions from the policies he promotes as being best for all Australians. This was illustrated during his time as a Minister under Howard, and is clear from his time as Opposition Leader.

With this, the reality of 'Prime Minister Tony Abbott' is a bleak one for women. Abbott does not respect a woman's control over her body and has attitudes about a woman's role in society that are well and truly stuck in the past.

Abbott's heaven is a modern Australian woman's hell.

The National Campaign Launch is taking place on Wednesday 23rd June in Melbourne. Feel free to come on down!
The event's keynote speaker is ethicist Dr Leslie Cannold, who as a long time abortion rights campaigner has much experience and knowledge on Tony Abbott's idea of heaven. We will also hear from Emily's List Australia.
