Following the announcement that the Cairns couple will go to trial over abortion charges on 12 October 2010, NUS Women's Department has endorsed the 9 October 2010 National Day of Action. Organised by the Women's Abortion Action Campaign (WAAC) in Sydney, Pro-Choice Action Collective in Brisbane and Radical Women in Melbourne, the groups will be organising rallies on the Saturday before the trial. Supporters will remember that a young couple in Cairns have been charged under Qld Criminal Code provisions which relate to abortion. If convicted, the young woman will face a maximum sentence of 7 years and the young man will face a maximum sentence of 3 years. The laws under which they have been charged date from 1899, are archaic and out of touch with Australian community opinion on the issue of abortion.
